Iron Mountain Helps Performance Contracting Group Protect Distributed Data and Reduce IT Support Costs

Nation’s Ninth Largest Specialty Contractor Turns to Iron Mountain’s Connected DataProtector/PC Product to Safeguard Data on 800 Desktops and Laptops

June 22, 2005

Boston, MA - Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE: IRM), the world’s trusted partner for outsourced records management and data protection services, announced that Performance Contracting Group (PCG), one of the nation’s largest specialty contractors, is using Iron Mountain’s Connected DataProtector/PC™ product to protect the data that resides on 800 desktop and laptop PCs in 60 offices and job sites across the country.

Prior to implementing Connected DataProtector/PC as a corporate standard, PCG required employees to perform backups themselves.Unfortunately, only one in five employees would regularly back up their data to the server, resulting in frequent data loss.In fact, many of PCG’s employees were taking their laptops home at night, neglecting to back up their data altogether. PCG soon realized the critical nature of performing daily data backups to safeguard vital company information. However, the company needed an easy, non-obtrusive way to protect the data on all desktop and laptop PCs.Iron Mountain solved this problem with automated data protection software that is programmed to back up data on each system at a set time to avoid interruptions in information access for employees.

“We evaluated a number of solutions, but Iron Mountain’s Connected DataProtector/PC did the best job of taking the human element out,” said Ron McCrary, technical services manager for Performance Contracting Group.“Now, we not only have the peace of mind our data will be protected, but it also takes our support staff only one third of the time to manage backups. That translates into a time savings of one to two hours per day per person.”

With Iron Mountain’s Connected DataProtector/PC, which encrypts data using 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), PCG has the assurance that all of the data on its employees’ PCs is completely secure and readily available at any time. The data is protected on PCG’s own servers and the product’s Backup and Retrieve function enables PCG to quickly restore lost or damaged files due to occurrences such as data corruption or simple human mistakes, viruses or lost laptops. In addition, the solution’s patented data reduction technology backs up only the most recent changes to a document and saves copies of shared files only once, ultimately easing costs associated with storing the same files several times. This data reduction process is also a benefit to the 40 percent of PCG employees who are mobile laptop users because it reduces the strain of data backup when network bandwidth is limited.

“The need for scalable, secure and storage-efficient data backup solutions is on the rise in companies of all sizes worldwide,” said John Clancy, executive vice president of Iron Mountain’s Digital business unit.“Companies like PCG recognize Connected DataProtector/PC as an ideal solution for protecting a growing amount of distributed data while freeing up time for limited IT resources to focus on other critical business tasks.”

Offered as both a subscription service and licensed software, Iron Mountain’s Connected DataProtector/PC is the only PC data protection product on the market to provide secure, automated backup, and data recovery functionality for organizations of all sizes – even those with 100,000 PCs or more.Corporations that arm their PCs with DataProtector/PC automatically prevent data loss, increase data security, help ensure business continuity and reduce hard-dollar costs related to storage.
